Geographic Information Systems Lab
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory of the NAFTA Intermodal Transportation Institute is now fully operational. This page includes information on the GIS Lab at the Dowling College Brookhaven Center.
  • New! Dowling College is offering a course titled Introduction to GIS in the coming spring semester at Dowling College's Brookhaven campus. The course will be conducted at the GIS Lab and will be aimed at giving students knowledge of how GIS works and its applications together with hands on experience with ArcView GIS.
  • New! GIS Day 1999. Art Van Nostrand from the GIS Lab at Dowling College, Mary Daum from Brookhaven National Lab, and Kevin Nolan from Spatial Solutions participated in a GIS day event. This event was sponsored by the three organizations and brought an introduction to GIS to Mrs. Sharon Hayes' classes at Albert G. Prodell Middle School (Shoreham - Wading River). The students performed exercises and heard presentations on the power of GIS to solve many problems. The GIS Lab has prepared a slideshow of the event and BNL has posted a web page with additional information.
  • The NAFTA ITI GIS Lab recently conducted a demonstration of the application of GIS to economic development for the New York State Office of Economic Development. Demonstration GIS Maps were produced for a potential development site (Veterans Field) in Glens Falls, NY. We demonstrated how GIS can allow potential developers to review important information to make business location decisions. Providing this information via the internet can provide access for potential developers around the world and result in economic growth for New York State. You can view these demonstration maps using the following links. 1.Veterans Field Regional Transportation Map. 2. Veterans Field Local Map.
  • The NAFTA Intermodal Transportation Institute announced the establishment of the GIS Lab at the Dowling College Brookhaven Center during the Spring '99 Meeting of the Long Island GIS Users Group. An article was also placed in the LIGIS Spring '99 Newsletter.
